NLC Holds 3 Days Workshop on Hydropower Potential in GB
Gilgit: A three days National Workshop on Hydropower Potential in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) was held at Karakoram International University. The workshop was organized by Applied Technologies Institute NLC (ATIN) in which senior officials of the provincial government, Technical Education & Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA), prominent hydropower experts, students from different universities, businessmen and entrepreneurs participated.
Chief Minister GB Hafiz Hafeez ur Rehman was the chief guest at the inaugural session. Addressing the participants, the chief minister informed that the northern areas of Pakistan have a potential of producing 80000 MW of electricity. Exploiting this economical source of clean energy can help economic turnaround of Pakistan by providing cheap electricity to industries and domestic consumers. He said that it is imperative to lay down transmission lines to connect this power to the national grid.
Col (Retd) Tassadaq Rasheed, Director ATINs highlighted the role of technical institutes established by NLC across Pakistan and its contribution towards promotion of skill education in the country especially in GB. He also informed that ATIN Gilgit will start short courses in hydropower and fruit processing soon. Holding of workshop is a step towards that end, he added.
Brig Muhammad Iqbal Director NLC GB was Chief Guest at closing ceremony. He highlighted the importance of technical education for local community to address the issue of unemployment among youth. He disclosed that NLC will setup new campuses at Diamer and Skardu for imparting technical skills to youth across GB .
Secretary Water & Power GB Mr.Yawar Hussain and Shahjahan Mirza MD Private Power & Infrastructure Board (PPIB), Coordinator TEVTA and Lt Col (Retd) Rashid Iqbal Chief Organizer of the Workshop also addressed the participants. They highlighted the importance of hydropower & technical education in community development and elimination of unemployment.
At the end the Chief Guest distributed certificates among participants and presented shield to Vice Chancellor KIU Dr Atta ulah Shah.
